Usage Tips

Below are some tips for optimal usage of the Family Law Solution.

  • Lawyer codes and DX numbers can be entered against the contact record when either ‘Responsible Lawyer' or 'Independent_Lawyer_of_Child' has been selected under the ‘Default Contact Types’ section of the contact record.

  • The ‘Letter to Other Side Requesting Discovery’ document template must be generated from the parties list of the matter. Once in the matter parties list, click on the blue and white menu icon that appears next to the display photo of the person you are sending the letter to. The option to generate the document will appear underneath.

  • Independent Children's Lawyer contacts should be created as an Individual contact with the Company Name entered in the 'Employer' field for the information in the Court Forms to populate fully.

  • The field for the Other Party Lawyer's reference, which is found in some of the document templates, is added in the ‘Family Law Info' matter custom data collection.

  • Your client must always be listed as the participant type ‘Client’. You must also specify who that client is in the matter – e.g. the wife, husband, mother, father etc. If the matter is in court or proceeds to court then you must list your client as the relevant court participant – e.g. Applicant or Respondent. Therefore, it may sometimes be the case that a client is listed as a party three times in a matter (e.g. as the 'Client', as the 'Mother', and as the 'Applicant').

  • It is very important that you do not update any of the names of existing Participant Types because it may affect the coding and merge fields of documents and court forms. Creating or adding a new Participant Type is fine.

  • The majority of matter types come with two custom data collections - Family Law Info and Court Form Info.

  • All precedent templates are stored in the "Precedent Documents" matter type.

  • Family Law Court forms are stored under the 'Family Law Court Forms' matter type and Federal Circuit Court forms under the 'Federal Circuit Court Forms' matter type. You can generate any of these documents from within any matter as long as permissions haven't been edited to restrict this.
