Many merge fields require additional instructions to pull the correct data. Merge field options provide these instructions. They can affect which record is accessed, formats, what to do when there is no data, and many other things. ​

For example, the merge field to get a full name of a matter participant is FullName.​

However, only providing the primary field (FullName) will not send adequate instructions to Actionstep about which name to pull. Adding an option will tell Actionstep which participant’s name you want.​

In this case, the pt or “participant type” option can be used to dictate which matter party name you want. Options are separated by the primary field by a pipe character |​

For the Client on a matter, it would look like: FullName|pt=Client​
